Fertilizers And Their Effect On the Environment

One of the things I find myself cautious about is the food I eat that is grown in farmers that use fertilizers. I know these days it is difficult to tell what really happens at these farms so because of this I tend to go for the organically grown foods. I am still amazed that most farmers still use dangerous fertilizers on their crops. Here is a bit of what I found out about fertilizers and how they can affect the environment.

Fertilizers are of great agricultural importance. But they can end up having great impact on lives of individuals. There is therefore need to handle them very carefully like how central heating oil suppliers handle their flammable product. Each type of fertilizer requires specific method of handling. We should not forget that fertilizers are made up of chemicals like ammonia, sodium, potassium and phosphate. These chemicals can lead to pollution of the environment and death if ingested.

So as to prevent the possibility of fertilizers affecting the environment negatively, it should be used according to the directions given. It should never be applied excessively. It should be applied with full consideration of the need of the plant.

When the quantity applied is in excess of what is needed, the excess is washed off into water bodies when rain falls. They can also dissolve into ground water. The water body around the area becomes contaminated. Animals and plants that depend on the water for sustenance will be affected and may die.

Excessive application of fertilizer also leads to the death of the normal flora on the ground around the plant. The useful bacteria die and the ecosystem in that area will get negatively affected. The plant on which the fertilizer is applied too may end up dying instead of growing.

In some cases the fertilizer will remain on the crop and stay there even when it reaches the consumers home and become a part of a meal.
