Obsession with ‘Chicago’

It is absolutely right to say that Chicago, the longest running revival on Broadway, is an obsession. And seeing it once, twice will only further engrave the opinion in our minds.

This fantastic presentation of lies, deceit, lost love, sleaze and murder is a theatre lover’s delight. Directed by Walter Bobbie and with music by John Kander and Fred Ebb, this show, celebrating its tenth year running, is still ’the hottest show in town’.

The plot revolves around the attention hungry Roxie Hart when she ’accidentally’kills her lover while two timing her husband. Her arrest takes her to jail where the conniving warden wants her piece of the meat for almost everything that Roxie desires. The two murders accused ’star’in the jail, Velma Kelly, becomes Roxie’s ideal only to push her into the claws of the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn. Roxie soon learns the trick of the trade and becomes a star in her own right upsetting the sultry Velma.

The brilliant start cast and the settings add to the performance of the refined actors.

Chicago was also released in a movie version some years back starring Renee Zellweger (as the lost puppy Roxie) Catherine Zeta Jones (as the sexy murderess Velma) while Richard Gere essayed the role of the scheming lawyer Flynn. The movie was a runaway hit and went on to win seven Academy Awards and eight BAFTA awards.

The brilliant show is running at the Cambridge Theatre, Earlham Street, WC2 9HU. It is nearly a three musical laced with wonderful performances and promises to be the joy of a perfect evening out! In fact, I can never be bored of it and have even caught a show in between my classes of personal training Swindon.
